SUSTAINABILITY

Our company started,
since the beginning, under the
principle of sustainability.

We are an ecological lodge in Southern Pantanal operating nature-based tours in a preserved and wild area in the Salobra River Delta, with the least possible environmental impact.

The lodge has only 8 rooms, accommodating a limited number of guests at a time. These rooms have been adjusted from the original rooms of an old farmhouse and redesigned to provide hotel comfort.

Respect And Protect

Our tour groups are composed of a controlled number of guests, not exceeding 6 people. This approach allows us to minimize impact and disturbance in nature, ensuring a cohesive group focused on the field guide’s attention. Additionally, it promotes a quieter environment, enhancing the chances of wildlife sightings, and ensures greater guest safety, always under the care of the field guide. This way, we avoid unnecessary disruptions to nature.

Trained and Dedicated Team

Our team members primarily come from the region – they are pantaneiros (from the Pantanal) or from the Serra da Bodoquena – originating from cities such as Corumbá, Aquidauana, Miranda, and Bodoquena, as well as indigenous villages of the Terena ethnic group. They undergo thorough training and necessary capacity-building. Whenever possible, we organize an annual year-end trip for the team to explore other tourist destinations within the region or in other parts of Brazil. The IDS is committed to developing strategies that embrace the best practices specially designed to the specificities of the Salobra Delta.

We support the development of the local economy

We contribute to the local economy by purchasing provisions, vegetables, and supplies from producers in Miranda, integrating our business into the local economy. Additionally, we cultivate some vegetables, herbs, and spices within our lodge. We believe in playing a crucial role in the conservation of the Salobra Delta Pantanal, the preservation of the environment and natural resources, as well as the promotion of the local economy and culture. We work in direct partnership and support the INSTITUTO DELTA DO SALOBRA (IDS), which, among many other initiatives, educates visitors about the ecosystem of the Salobra Delta and its context in the Pantanal. We believe in our fundamental role in conserving the Salobra River Delta wetlands, By preserving its environment and natural resources and enhancing the local economy and culture. We work in direct partnership and support the DELTA DO SALOBRA INSTITUTE(IDS), which carries out, among many other actions, work to educate visitors about the ecosystem of the Salobra Delta and its context in the Pantanal.

We are committed to aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing some key points:

SUMMARY OF SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES ADOPTED AT THE REFÚGIO DA ILHA ECOLODGE:

ECOGASTRONOMY
Ecogastronomy stands as one of our sustainability premises. Our culinary focus prioritizes recipes that celebrate local culture and biodiversity. We produce bread, cakes, cookies, and desserts. Pantanal-sourced meat, natural seasonings, and regionally produced vegetables enrich our dishes. These ingredients are all sourced locally in Miranda or our lodge.
BIODEGRADABLE BATHROOM AMENITIES:
We use biodegradable products to reduce the environmental impact of personal hygiene product disposal. These products are designed to naturally degrade with time. Minimizing plastic waste accumulation in landfills and avoiding harmful chemicals such as parabens and sulfates.
BIODEGRADABLE CLEANING PRODUCTS:
Our cleaning products are homemade, utilizing natural ingredients such as soap, liquid degreasers, window cleaners, and disinfectants.
INCENTIVES SMALL LOCAL PRODUCERS and ACQUISITION OF LOCAL PRODUCTS:
We source milk, eggs, cheeses, and sausages from local producers and neighboring properties. In addition, we consume Pantanal-raised meat, organic vegetables, and herbs from regional markets.
VALUE OF LOCAL CULTURE:
Our daily life strongly represents the local and Southern Pantanal culture. It becomes evident in many ways. Our cuisine, souvenir shop products, festive occasions, and special nights featuring local musicians for an acoustic performance of regional rhythms. Our staff members ́ thick pantaneiro accents. And the fact that some of them belong to the Terena indigenous ethnic group.
ACTIVITIES WITH LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
We limit our tour groups to a maximum number of 6 people and allow a maximum of 4 tour groups simultaneously, each engaging in different activities, such as boating, hiking, horseback riding, and jeep riding. Our ecolodge has only 8 apartments. When sighting wildlife, we avoid interfering with and disturbing animals, maintaining a quiet approach. These are just a few points that highlight our work philosophy.
SUPPORT FOR RESEARCH AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION PROJECTS:
Recently or actively supported: We support and collaborate with projects such as Onçafari, Arara Azul Institute, Papagaio Verdadeiro Project, and Delta do Salobra Institute, engaging in research and environmental conservation actions in the region.
CHARGING AN ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION FEE:
To offer support to the Delta do Salobra Institute (IDS), we charge an environmental conservation fee.[Insira o link correspondente aqui].
SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING:
All waste produced is properly separated and stored in an appropriate location. Organic waste is used for composting and transformed into high-quality fertilizer for plants and gardens. Another excellent product of this process is slurry, an incredible biofertilizer. Recyclable solid waste, such as cardboard, glass, plastic, and aluminum, is separated, cleaned, dried, and donated to the Recycling Cooperative in Miranda City.
LIQUID EFFLUENT TREATMENT SYSTEM:
Our guesthouse has a sewage treatment system that uses septic tanks and emerging aquatic plants to treat effluents efficiently and sustainably.
